We operate exclusively to provide educational gardening programming and access to gardening space to the public, as well as distributing produce to those facing food insecurity.

Location

The Village of Union Groves Park & Recreation Committee has graciously reserved some land for the Union Grove Community Garden at the West end of Leider Park at the dead-end of 8th Ave

Our Story

It all started with a social media post polling for interest in a community garden within Union Grove. It was not long after that elected officials called a meeting for us to have a discussion about the post. The desire for a community garden within the village was of great interest by the community and the village itself but it was acknowledged that the village didn’t have the resources to dedicate to the constant attention, maintenance and coordination it takes for a successful community garden space, but they did have a location in mind. After a few public meetings and getting additional like-minded and motivated individuals together, we decided to create an organization to provide oversight of the Union Grove Community Garden and apply for a 501(c)(3).

It was early on with our deliberations that Educational components were to be a cornerstone of our mission. Creating opportunities for collaboration projects with local businesses and organizations that were well-fitted with our goals came in at a second important measure. We felt collectively that the synergies that a community garden as an organization can provide a great deal of unique opportunities of enrichment for residents, businesses and organizations.
